How many of you concentrate on sounds more than read out?

Sound only for me. I wouldnt trust what the screen is telling me.

I hunt....Sounds/tones then to the SE digital screen to see if I can get a idea off what it is...say 00-29..quarter, silver qt, aluminum foil top, silver dollar if it goes lower?, ........... Knowing your screen can help..that's why it there, along with the other features combine to make it easier and more informative. But if you can go with out that's a plus...say with a excalibur, no screen just tones, and allmetal, by the shape, duration, and strenght of the signal or in discriminate mode, by the tones hi to lo ..being gold in the mid tonerange.........try to take advange of all they give you...

I've had my Explorer since 2000 and the only thing I know about the screen (smart screen) is small button hits low and towards the right, coin usually high and right, and cannon ball high and left. That is the extent of my knowledge, but sure don't know how the heck the screen would help anyone for the type of sites I detect!

PS... I only know cannonball hits where it does because one day I got a target and everything pointed to it possibly being a ball so I scanned a bit more and looked at the screen a few times to enjoy the moment. (4 pounder)

Sound to find a target,

then numbers to pinpoint.

when the numbers stop jumping I know I'm close to centered.

Sometimes on very weak hard to ID
as a target or imagination sound :tongue3:
I'll compare tone to number & Play
a game with myself on "Can I Say in
my head what I'm going to find"
then of course dig.

I win sometimes :coffee2:

I'm definitely a sound primary, visual ID secondary user with the Etrac. After I get it pinpointed and an idea as to the size, I will check the ID with "the Minelab wiggle". Then I will decide to dig.

Not sure if its right but it works for me. :-X

:hello: I do.....
Rarely, and I mean rarely do I go by the numbers. Especially if I'm in an area known to hold very old relics. If it's a solid tone, it's going to either end up in my trash bag, or my vest for future display.

Definitely Sound, which is the main reason I decided to order a new GT rather than the E-Tac. Well....that and the big cost savings. The decision, allowed me to get an Infinium too. So, now I can enjoy hunting both land and water w-out having to worry about dunking my land machine. :hello2:

My goal is to find enough gold with the Infinium to be able to buy Minelabs "next" great one.

Sound primarily, but sometimes deep rusted iron can give off that great high pitched silvery tone. If the area has a lot of deep iron, I will look down at the screen and watch the bullseye on the smart find display. If it stays top right, I dig, if it falls to bottom right.....I still dig the first couple just to be sure that it is in fact deep iron (always has been so far).

I use the 305 and yes, I pay attention to both, unless I get a broken signal, then I usually don't dig. I'll only use the display to give me an idea of what I might be digging, but I don't rely on the display to tell me what's there. If its a solid signal, I dig.

I use the sound to get my attention and the display to make the call. I look at the depth and if it's shallow I go by the numbers. If it's deep, I go by the sound.

if your skipping all broken signals your missing good targets mixed in beside iron/trash I promise you!

I run with the Safari. Actually, I find the VDI screen to be incredibly accurate. Especially on coins. I go by sound initially for the hit. Then I take a peek at the screen. Most VDI screens on detectors today are fairly accurate. Doesn't mean the screen is dead-on, but, most of the time it will give you a very good idea of what's there. Within reason. That coupled with the size of the pinpoint, depth, volume of the signal, etc., and you will soon be able to predict what will be coming out of the ground...most of the times anyways :laughing7:

that is true if it is a coin with nothing in same hole, but what if you have a nail in the hole or can slaw right beside coin? If you have a nickel and a quarter in same hole it won't read anywhere near quarter etc.....
and to the guy who does not dig broken signals.....if you have a coin and iron in the hole it may well only hit from one direction and may just be broken and scratchy

That's why I tend to dig all signals goes4ever. Unless I'm at a modern park where It's not worth it for me to dig 10,000 pull-tabs to MAYBE get a ring. Anywhere old, I dig all. So, I normally find out what's in the hole anyways - near garbage or not

Except at the end of a long day of swinging, where my arm is about to fall off, I usually then cherry pick only the "better" signals :icon_sunny:

Hmm. Thank you for that advice. I'll start checking more closely.

I have heard a lot about the sound only theory and have seen posts by several detectorists that seem to have luck with it. But my question is, why spend all that money on a detector with all the bells and whistles and then not use them? I would think that a less expensive detector without the screen and all the numbers would serve just as well for those who subscribe to that theory. I use a little of both I suppose , but have not really given it that much thought. Maybe I should? Monty

That's why I Prefer a Mid rage detector

no bells & Whistles to fool me into missing things
