With no assurances it will be allowed to join the Gulf of Mexico oil spill cleanup, a Taiwanese-owned ship billed as the world's largest skimming vessel was preparing to sail Friday evening to the scene of the Deepwater Horizon disaster.

The ship -- the length of 3 1/2 football fields and 10 stories high -- is designed to collect up to 500,000 barrels of oily water a day through 12 vents on either side of its bow . . .

Environmental Protection Agency approval is required because some of the seawater returned to the Gulf would have traces of oil.

Someone needs to give them a good shaking!

Someone has to do something!!! People have already died in the explosion. Sea life in the area is being burned alive in some of the "controlled burns" because they get caught in the nets while collecting the oil for burning. Add to that the people who are going to die as a result of the chemicals we have already seen coming onshore miles inland through rainstorms carrying oil and dispersant.

Let's see . . . The ship can collect 1/2 million BARRELS (not gallons, barrels) of oil daily. But, it might not completely clean the water to pristine condition before it returns it to the gulf . . . those filthy polluters!

CLEAN UP THE MESS! YOU CAN WORRY ABOUT THE LAWSUITS AFTER.

You cant't fix stupid...

Sad. Very Sad.

you can fix stupid 8)

Pretty sad all around if you ask me. I got a kick out of this quote in the article too;

"The company said it also needs a waiver of the 1920 Jones Act, which limits the activities of foreign-flagged ships in coastal U.S. waters. The A Whale is Liberian-flagged vessel."

That Jones act has been outdated for decades and it's time to revamp it to 2010. I know the shipping industry pretty well and I also hate to mention that the majority of vessels fly the Liberian flag because the registry is dirt cheap and they are known as runaway flag vessels. I wonder how many US flag companies our government can either think of, or mention :icon_scratch: It's been said so many times and is so true, "The inmates are running the asylum".

Based on other information available, it appears that the Jones Act is expected to be waived in this case. Let's all hope that once that happens the EPA will come to their senses.

I highly doubt that... Like I said before the inmates are running asylum and they can't see the forest because the tress are in the way.... Here is another article with a prime example

"The Dutch know how to handle maritime emergencies. In the event of an oil spill, The Netherlands government, which owns its own ships and high-tech skimmers, gives an oil company 12 hours to demonstrate it has the spill in hand. If the company shows signs of unpreparedness, the government dispatches its own ships at the oil company’s expense. “If there’s a country that’s experienced with building dikes and managing water, it’s the Netherlands,” says Geert Visser, the Dutch consul general in Houston.

In sharp contrast to Dutch preparedness before the fact and the Dutch instinct to dive into action once an emergency becomes apparent, witness the American reaction to the Dutch offer of help. The U.S. government responded with “Thanks but no thanks,” remarked Visser, despite BP’s desire to bring in the Dutch equipment and despite the no-lose nature of the Dutch offer — the Dutch government offered the use of its equipment at no charge. Even after the U.S. refused, the Dutch kept their vessels on standby, hoping the Americans would come round. By May 5, the U.S. had not come round. To the contrary, the U.S. had also turned down offers of help from 12 other governments, most of them with superior expertise and equipment — unlike the U.S., Europe has robust fleets of Oil Spill Response Vessels that sail circles around their make-shift U.S. counterparts.

The Americans, overwhelmed by the catastrophic consequences of the BP spill, finally relented and took the Dutch up on their offer — but only partly. Because the U.S. didn’t want Dutch ships working the Gulf, the U.S. airlifted the Dutch equipment to the Gulf and then retrofitted it to U.S. vessels. And rather than have experienced Dutch crews immediately operate the oil-skimming equipment, to appease labour unions the U.S. postponed the clean-up operation to allow U.S. crews to be trained.

A catastrophe that could have been averted is now playing out."

Well after reviewing my last post I should take back my comment on the inmates running asylum.. Now I am seeing the big picture, and all Americans should start looking at this as I am..

This disaster is a blessing in disguise, it protects union jobs, and most of all will create more jobs, thereby aiding our declining economy.

While I would love to say that the United States is a super power and can handle all of our problems, I cannot because we cannot....we need to accept the fact that this disaster is completely out of our hands and we do not have the expertise/knowledge/tools to clean it up.....we must accept help from all who offer to help and we must return the help down the line......as far as the Taiwanese ship is concerned, I would think that traces of oil are a heck of a lot better than straight, thick, black crude oil in our waters......does anyone else agree???

I think you're preaching to the choir Ron (PA) :laughing7:

It's a sin and a shame that the US considers itself too big, too smart for outside help. I guess we are used to complaining about how the USA will get involved to help everyone else in a disaster, but when the favor is returned we look a gift horse in the mouth. No wonder we're a hated nation, we show no gratitude.

Ron, that is my exact argument. Traces versus pure crude.

Seems a no brainer, but maybe I have overestimated the pool of intelligence the EPA has access to :icon_scratch:. Maybe for an upgrade, we can replace them with Mrs. Johnson's kindergarten class. At least they can understand the difference between a little bit of chocolate syrup in their milk versus a bunch of chocolate syrup in their milk.

They don't want to clean it up.It's a money maker just as it is. So they will let it spew for a while.Watch the price of crude jump exponentially as this disaster continues. They could have contained it in the first few days if it were in their plan. Good Luck. rockhound

this is all gonna backfire right in their faces (our government) they seem to only want union workers working..thats my personal opinion. what a cluster %$&^

That is exactly what I was joking about, Uncle Sam does not want to hire nonunion workers, otherwise it'll look like they are hiring scabs. Scabs, now that is something that would stop the flow. OK, hire non union workers and sink them in to fill and stop the flow :laughing7:

unions suck, I used to belong to one when I worked at the railroad.. the only thing a union does is take your money, and fights to keep union members jobs who deserve to be fired.. there was so many bums on the railroad that didnt even deserve jobs but the union fought for em.. pitiful.. thats when I lost all respect for unions..

===================================================================
You are right. But the most important thing to unions nowadays are dues. They have become their own
big business & like crooked politicians, they care little for the working class as long as the money is coming
in. Nearly all of the Big Unions are deep in bed with the companies, now realizing they need each other to
survive. If you think 'big money & big companies' don't own union officials, you're bull-$h!tting yourself.
Especially those with the 'PAC' (political action committees) that donated big, big money to put BO into
office. What do you expect, now it's time for him to pay them back. This includes the Teacher's Union.
