How to clean rust

I haven't posted in a while. But, today I found a penny sized pendant about 5 inches down. I can make out stars around the edges, and some lettering. However, it is quite thin and don't want damage it. Any suggestions?

Of what metal is it made? You should post close-up photos of the item so we can see the damage.

Not sure of metal. It has hash marks like a penny, and 10 stars around the outer edge. There is a design in the center. It looks like the thing may have been stamped. I can't get a decent photo

How do you attach a photo

Go into the toolbar, which is immediately above where you reply. Select the third what looks a "screen" from the right side in, then follow the directions.
