How to date a no date Standing Liberty Quarter

If it has no stars under the eagle on the reverse side it is either a 1916 or 1917 unless it has a D or S mint mark.In that case, it's a 1917. You may be thinking of how to possibly date Buffalo nickels whose dates are unreadable.
Don....

Also, if the rest of the coin is not badly worn, it's probably a pre '25 coin as the '25 and newer versions have a modified base where the date is that helped keep it from wearing as bad as the earlier ones. If the coin is significantly worn all over, you'll only be able to tell if it's the type 1 1916-7 or the late '17 and up type 2. As Don mentioned, the 3 stars under the eagle on the reverse is a type 2. No stars and a bare breast on the obverse and it's a type 1.

If it has stars under the eagle it dates from 1916-1917, and in 1926 they made it so the date would not wear off as easily. Once the date is gone on a silver coin there is nothing you can do to bring it back. On buff. nickels you can acid date them with Nic-a-Date.

Coinman123,

Take her out to dinner and a movie

Ha - Dinner and a movie? You know an old gal will never reveal her true age. When I was a kid coin collector in the early 60's there was an acid that was marketed right by the nickel date back acid at coin shops. Too many liabilities in our brave new world, but a bit of research might turn up a solution. Makes me wonder what the 22k acid from a gold and silver test kit might do.

It still exists today. Called Nic-a-Date.
