How to preserve iron

Found some iron last week. In my part of the state there are several shell fragments from the civil war. How do I kept from flaking away?

Use an electro chemical process that will scale and stop the oxidation process and then apply linseed oil to the piece while warm. Oil will soak into the grain of the iron and produce a pleasant sealed gloss.

In short, stop the corrosion and finish with boiled linseed oil.
