No Pret-A-Portes in the '30s, there were bathouses on the boardwalk. It's the Atlantic Ocean, not a lake where the water may hang around. In the early '50s when I, as a child, used to swim there and follow a rope underwater, it was clean and clear. Even now, the dry sand may hold a lot of debris but the water is still clean and clear othewise there would be signs keeping people out of the water.
