excuse the dumb newbie question, but i was wondering how all the stuff that we find is buried anyway. i can see it for beaches with the constant movement of the sand, but... how do all the coins and stuff get buried under dirt and grass and stuff

It moves every day. Some times Slowly, Some times rather fast.

Rain can wash soil over the object.

Wind can do the same.

Growing grass can lift soil over a over a object.

The Specific Gravity of the object comes into play!

I watched an earth worm carry one off one night and suck it right down into it's hole....

Really, like above said...gremlins...

No..really seriously,...grass being mowed, freeze and thaw, people stepping on them, specific gravity like said above...rain washing dirt over them....too many things possible to even begin to answer that question.

I'm just thankful there is something going on that DOES bury them...gremlins, worms or real science.

But earth worms have a lot to do with the ground soil constantly moving
I this it was National geographic that had an article about said issue.
the ground is constantly moving,
that's why rocks / stone surface the way they do

You are all wrong!! Some don't fill their holes. someone does not see them and falls which in turn causes them to loose the coins in the hole. (and of course they do then fill in the hole so no one else can fall in!!)
