We need the diameter and probably the length. However, it appears that it could be an 155mm Howitzer shell projectile or a 105mm M60 Tank shell projectile but probably the former. I was in an Armored Tank Unit (Headquarters Company 2nd Battalion, 33rd Armored "Tigers", 1st Brigade, 3rd Armored Division and it looks a little big for an M60 Tank shell projectile but not having a reference for size, I can't be sure. Also, it could be a projectile from a towed Howitzer type Cannon used by a Field Artillery Unit.

The Broad Arrow stamp ID's it as British, a shell that size is going to appeal to collectors for sure. As far as I can tell it's for a WW1 era
BL 8 Mk 7 8-inch Howitzer. Can you post a pic of the bottom of the shell?

It would be for this gun if I'm correct in my ID

I have a 155mm howitzer shell that I use as my change jar, it weighs about 45 lbs empty so by the time it's got enough change to be worth stealing it'll be too heavy to be worth the effort.

I've thought about burying it full of change so I can dig it up in a future life but even if I dug into it tomorrow I'd say "pipe" and fill my hole back in, so it's a work in progress for my ADHD riddled thinker muscle.

What I was looking for is to see if there was a fuse in the base. The two holes there are for a pin spanner. That plug will thread out and there will be a cavity inside the shell where an explosive would be. I'm not sure if that is a transport plug, and meant to be replaced with a fuse or if it's a plug that was used on practice rounds that were not explosive. If I had it, I would make a spanner and remove that plug carefully to see what if anything is inside. My guess is that it will be empty, or possibly filled with sand to match the weight of a live shell.

Here's a British Ordinance diagram of the Explosive version showing the fused base :

Or maybe it was an early guided missile prototype...
