I went metal detecting, and stepped on a yellow jacket's nest, and end up getting a sting to the leg. I then go to the Supermarket, and a woman was putting coins in the self checkout station. I noticed a silver edge in the quarter section. I told her I collect coins, and I'm wondering if I can buy that quarter with the silver edge, sure enough she said yes, and it was a 1964 silver quarter. Than she says that the tray at the service desk is full of silver dollars, and that I could buy them. I figured that she might have an Ike dollar or two, but I figured it was worth checking. She then said some of them are worn, but they are from around the 1930's, at that point I'm thinking maybe there might be something there, maybe a piece dollar which would be incredible. Finally she pull out the tray and I feel like I might have a heart-attack, the tray was overflowing with walking liberty half dollars. She asked how many I would like, I quickly said, "I'll buy them all." She said OK, but she warned me that some of them are pretty worn. She took them all out, and put them in piles of two, the grand total, 16 dollars. I had no cash on me, and she said no credit cards, so I got $20 from the ATM, which was only 20 feet away from the tray. Than she hands the 90% 32 walking liberty half dollar to me, plus the four dollars in change, and I run to the car with them, clumsily dropping all of them on the pavement, but I picked all of them up, and made it home.

The dates are:

1917p X2
1934p
1934s
1935p X2
1936P
1936d
1937p X2

1939p X2
1940p X2
1941p X2

1942p X2

1943s
1944p X2
1944d

and finally my 1964p quarter.

While I am happy for the person who gained this booty, I can't help but think of who lost his collection too!

Think about it! All those consecutive dates and the coverage of mint marks across the group!
To me, they were either stolen by some burglar or found by some kid out of his Grandpa's closet!
Or, perish the thought, some senior citizens last cash, redeemed for food, unable to know the real value.
And worse of all, the greed in the comments that followed. Didn't anyone else think about what "I" just mentioned?

Obviously NOT!

It is a sad showing from most of us who go through great efforts to return lost items to their rightful owners!
I would certainly at least ask the store owner/manager/employees if they might remember how they came by them.

AND................DO THE RIGHT THING!

Those coins were on their way to being melted. I say congrats to the finder!!!

Dude, congrats!! :occasion14: The right place at the right time... Way to go.. Who hasnt found a silver coin in the coinstar?? What a score..

very nice score! made a similar score a week ago myself.

Being at a super market I'm sure they couldn't take more than face value for them... Instead of a rude comment, maybe suggest he pays it forward and buys her a coffee or something lol

I can see your and a couple other guys' points and you're right, maybe a Starbucks card is a bit tastier than my comment. I'm "standing" corrected.

Sweet score!!!! WTG!!!

Very nice score!

I would certainly keep that lady under my thumb, and touch base with her every time you go to that store. I would consider this: The REAL score here is a connection with someone working there who may have the wherewithal to keep her eye out for silvers and save them to the side for you. I would most definitely get her a card with a Starbucks or Carrabba's gift card inside.

Awesome score, always nice when something like that falls out of nowhere!!!!!!! :-)

:occasion18::occasion16::wav::occasion16::occasion18: Wow! Gorgeous Walkers! First yellow jackets were after you, but then an amazing surprise! Don't blame ya for rushing to the car like a little kid & dropping the coins on the way! I probably would've dropped them three times, or else rolled around in those amazing quarters like a puppy once they'd scattered on the ground! Friendly clerk to clue you in that they had lots of them! Giant congrats! :icon_thumright: Andi

I would have given her more for the coins. You knew those coins were worth a lot more so you took advantage. All for a little profit.

Good luck to you

Wow.....that was an unneeded and ridiculous comment. When is the last time banks asked for over face value for coins?? And do you think nobody would have looked at the cashier weird for pocketing money??? Just bad taste or jealousy to make that comment...

Great score man! Myself and im sure everyone else would have done the same!!!

Wow that is sweet! Hard not to smile all the way home with that score!

I always look but never find. Congrats on a great save!

Believe it or not, the woman knew that they were silver, and had some value. The thing is, she had no interest in them at all. I will probably have to do something nice for her next time I'm at that store.
