Hunted a different beach today to avoid any more strange medallions...found 18 K

and would you believe it...two more medallions!

Heavy fog enveloped a terribly sanded - in beach late morning, but I found a promising area ( trough) and wet sand so I worked it to the bone for 3 hrs.

First find was a "4 -leaf clover" medallion...a good start 8)

Was finding clads, & miscellaneous items including another medallion ( ornate) during the next 2 1/2 hrs . before recovering a nice Tiger's Eye ( I think that's what the stone is...not sure) 18 K ring in the trough.

The GT surprisingly gave off a mid-high tone...not at all like the usual gold sound I've heard in the past...but it was a solid, confined tone ..... was surprised to see the ring in the scoop contents .

The spoon dates back to the mid-late 1800's according to this info I found on the net re: H& T Mfg . Co.:

H&T Mfg Co stands for Holmes & Tuttle Manufacturing. Holmes & Tuttle started in 1851 in Connecticut. In 1857, Bristol Brass & Clock purchased them. In 1901, the name was changed to American Silver Company and remained that until 1935 when it was purchased by International Silver.

Thanks to the keen observation of Goes4ever....I see that the dime which I posted as a 1940 is incorrect...silver "Rosie's" were not made until 1946.

I stand corrected. It is a 1949

The point is....... gold can sound like anything!

High carat, low carat, big, small, shallow, deep etc etc etc.

If it sounds... just dig it.... or leave it for those of us prepared to not worry about "unmistakable" tones!

Thanks for the info , Lou...I'm still learning all the sounds of the buried treasures; mostly I have heard low to med. solid tones on the gold that I have found..(12-14 K) and am not accustomed to finding 18 K ....but thanks to comments from you and seeker41 I am now more aware of what to listen for.

Hi Lorraine!

Please forgive my obvious sarcasm. I in no way am trying to belittle your achievements, on the contrary, I am most impressed with with your enthusiasm and finds.

But it concerns me that a certain amount of "tone-ist" snobbery has invaded the various forums, to the possible detriment of newer participants to the hobby as demonstrated by a recent post where the girl in question was worried that she could not pick the difference between can slaw and good targets.

Maybe this "tone-ist" propoganda has led newcomers to believe that by purchasing an Excal they will only dig gold by being able to distinguish the "unmistakable" low, sweet, etc sound of ......

I don't know, maybe my areas ( and I hunt many and varied ) are different to most, but let me tell you about my Easter experience.

We had 5 days of public holiday here in Oz.
I hunted every day, spending 28 hours in the water, all on snorkel, diving between 10-15'. I generally spend two thirds of my time on the bottom, IE, one minute down, 30 seconds up.
My finds.
5 bits of aluminium.
52 bits of brass.
17 bits of stainless steel.
335 coins.
374 lead sinkers plus one 45 pound lead ingot.
13 bits of junk jewelry.
5 bits of silver.
2 bits of gold. A totally disastrous result for the effort involved, especially considering that I usually get far more gold from this location on a casual hunt.
Over 800 non ferrous targets, not to mention the couple of dozen bottle caps and literally hundreds of pounds of ferrous metal that I drag out of the way the enable the Excal to see the good stuff.

The point?

Who amongst you is brave enough to claim that amongst the over 800 good responses you could have picked the "unmistakable" 2 tones, one 9ct and one 18ct of gold?

And just in case you claim you could have..... we have an expression here in Oz.... "Mate... your a bit full of yourself!".

By all means, you experienced hunters continue on as you see fit.

The rest of you...... IF IT MAKES A SOUND, ANY SOUND, DIG IT!!!! Or leave it for the next guy.....

Nice finds L, love the ring. If it was me I would hang the 4-leaf clover lucky charm on the detector.....

While many gold items have that nice low tone we love to hear and instantly recognize, I have seen many very nice gold rings that ring just like a pull tab or piece of can slaw......

Any one who buys a ML or any other detector for that matter and think it will allow them to just dig gold is sadly mistaken....


If you get a solid signal in multiple directions, even if it is only a whisper, no matter what the tone is, dig it.....

I enjoy the challenge of trying to figure out the item ( whatever it may be ) from the tone of it before I dig it... and although I get fooled so many times in my guessing, I have lots of fun doing this.

Being a "senior citizen", and fully aware that my years of detecting are waning, I just really enjoy getting out for the fresh air, exercise, and meeting people, and if in the process, treasures are found , that's a perk for me.

Being a "senior citizen", and fully aware that my years of detecting are waning, I just really enjoy getting out for the fresh air, exercise, and meeting people, and if in the process, treasures are found , that's a perk for me.

Lorraine, the last part of my post was more about what Lou was talking about and not really directed at you, but more to any new hunters who might read your post. I was supporting what Lou said, just like a meter, many tones can be misleading and anyone who buys a detector or hunts thinking they will only dig gold tones will miss a lot of targets which I guess is a good thing as it leaves the nice targets for those of us that know better.....

I, unfortunately have also joined the senior ranks, I will be 63 on my next BD.....This is one of the reasons I decided to cut all sugar out, lose weight, join a gym and get back in shape so I would be in good health in my senior years and and able to hunt longer.

Wife and I go to the gym 4-5 days a week for 1.5-2 hours now, 2-3 miles on the treadmill (30-45 mins) and an hour of weight strength training......

Maybe 25-35% of my gold jewelry finds I knew were gold by the nice low rich tone I got, I expected to see gold and did when I pulled my scoop up, the rest of my jewelry sounded just like pulltabs or canslaw and I had no idea what it was till I emptied my scoop....

I also dig all signals I get if they are not a null, and on all nulls I check them from multiple directions, I have found 2 gold rings this way, they gave a solid null one direction and a broken gold signal the other direction found small piece of iron with each.....
