I've lived in Pa. Central NJ and now in Cumberland County NJ. While in central NJ I was lucky enough to hunt a Revolutionary War battle field & made many nice finds. On and off over those years I've also been looking for Indian artifacts, to date I've never found one. I live now in a area of NJ that hasn't changed much or developed much. Greenwich is a big American Indian area and many a large collection has come from there. In the past, I know that a few dug out canoes have been found in the swamps around me (seems hard to believe). In Bridgeton up the road many artifacts have been collected with a big camp located on the bluff over looking the river. Rt 49 was part of in places one of the larger Indian pats from the states interior to the coast in Cape May. I've spend many hours looking and walking the fields & beaches along the Delaware Bay looking, but in over 30 years of looking, I've found nothing.

BILLT.

I have nothing in 25 years+ years of looking :headbang:

Wow that is hard to believe some of you guys have been hunting that long and havent found anything, I would probably given up, do you hunt occassionaly or do you hunt every chance you get? If you guys ever come to Ohio look me up and I will take you out for a hunt.

what part of ohio thebes

wow sorry guys you have had that luck. I can only think of a few times in the last 5 years that I have gone and come home empty handed. Most digs I get at least 2-4 each trip and fields anywhere from 2-3 up to 20 or so if I'm really lucky.
Maybe you need to take a look at why you are hunting the areas you hunt.
May need to find some more promising places.

Good luck with the hunting!!!

would love to take a trip to cookville and do some digging with ya, ever herd of a hula hoe that would be awesome for a shelter digging tool

yea Ive had a lot of ppl wanting to as well. right now though, this area I am gonna have to keep very limited for privacy for the owners/lessees of the property. They had to run off some guerrilla diggers a few years ago.
I feel extremely lucky in having gotten permission to be here.

i know a couple of fields, about 20 minutes from you, that produce for me just about every time i go. your def in the right part of the state to still find artifacts. you live in the town where the lenape had their only source of cohancey quartzite. there's an old quarry on wharton creek in greenwich. pm me, and i'll show you some spots sometime.

Tree................thanks for your answer, I understand about guerrilla diggers, the do give us honest guys a bad name. I've got some info. on places to hunt, permission is hard to get though. My daughter is an archaeologist, and very informed on NJ Indians. I have hunted Greenwich only once due to lack of permission, not due to trying though. Feel free to pm me, I have private info. on sites, camps, test pits and such of areas in Cumberland Co. NJ

rob.s......I see were in the same boat! Where are you located?

When you have been looking for a long time, then finally find your first piece, it makes it that much better. It took me years to find my first point. It makes me respect the hobby so much more. It will happen-and most likely when you are not expecting to find anything.

I have a friendly suggestion buy some books your not looking in the right place . Or your walking right by artifacts and not seeing them there's thousands make that millions laying right on the surface . Look around where would you like to live that's where I hunt . Water - food - shelter high ground where it floods areas with a lot of natural resources and shapes that don't belong . Good luck and keep your eyes on the ground .

hey tash didnt think you would wait around for 3 years too get an answer, but have you found one yet?

Not yet still looking.

You just need to hook up with someone who is willing to turn you on to a spot and show you the ropes. Here is a link to the Pa. Archaeological Society. There's a map showing all the local chapters. You will no doubt meet surface hunters at such meetings. Tell them 30 years and nada; somebody is bound to want to correct that injustice! It's an idea, anyway; you should meet collectors/hunters at those local meetings:

Society For Pennsylvania Archaeology

Just realized you're in New Jersey now. Oh well:laughing7:

So here's a page for NJ. It does state members bring artifacts to the meetings, so I'm certain you could meet surface hunters at such meetings, who could help you:

"Chapters in different parts of the state hold regular meetings, engage in fieldwork, register collections and publish on their activities. Their policies are in accord with Society objectives."

When some shows come to your town or close by go. You will meet people there from your area that enjoy the same hobby. I didn't think there was anyone in my area that collected till I went to a show. I have found a few hunting friends and now have some good places to go. Good luck rock

Hey Tash, exactly where are you looking? I mean what type of area? Avoid low lying fields, or areas that flood.

Do you find flint flakes?

Find a level elevated field by a good spring, once it's plowed and rained on, with the owner's permission, walk back and forth looking for flint. Concentrate on areas that have the most flint flakes. It's easy.....and fun.

When I was younger, and hunted a lot, I kept records of the frequency of my finds. It was 1.4 good points, and 3.5 broken points/hour. I hunted a lot of public land...places that were hit a lot....I bet that's a pretty normal average, if you just put some time in. Good Luck.

Charl............Been away for a few days, thank you for the great link. I'll be looking into it further.

Gold Maven............I been searching along the bluffs above the Cohanssey (sp) River which is an old camp site, next going to try along the base of the bluff, we've had a lot od rain so maybe something has washed down. There's also the Fairton area alone the same river just covered with sites. The fields next to these bluffs are plowed in the spring and fall and I've had permission to hunt some. According to D. Cross's book these sites are well confirmed as well as mapped. Conrad C. Abbott also documented these too.

In Greenwich I know of many sites too (but no permission to hunt them), but I'd prefer not to mention places or the people who supplied the info. on an open forum. If you'd like more info. on these I'd be happy to supply them. Anyone wishing more info. please email me at Ltrichuscg@gmail.com.

Rock........thanks I never thought of that!
