When I was in the Sea Bees in the early 60's. A group of us, when I was in Rhode Island, were talking about food and stuff, when I mentioned hush puppies, and how good they tasted. Well, the guys from up north thought all southerners would eat about anything if they would eat a dog.
We did eat possum, after caging for a week feeding it corn, coon, ground hog, squirrel, rabbit, frogs,
deer, turtle, quail and several other wild species, but not D O G!
Who in the world would eat their best huntin' partner.
So, after the air had cleared and all understood a hush puppy was different in different parts of the USA.
The cooks (slaves) would bring food from the cook house to the main house and the corn bread drippings that cooked when overflow from the skillet hit the stove, made little balls of cooked/fried corn balls. The slaves would pitch the corn balls to the barking dogs in the yard, saying "hush puppy", to keep them from jumping up on the people caring food to the main house.
In other words, we ate hush puppies, not wore them.
I do remember getting a pair, for my feet, when I mustered out and go a good paying job. (smile)

Could have been the one from Elvis' song "Hound Dog"

I’ve eaten a lot of snapping turtle, raccoon, groundhog, freshwater clams, etc. I don’t remember having an possum though.
