i will be down in the outer banks next month, corolla to be specific. if i were to go detecting what would be a good machine to take with me. right now i only own a BH Lonestar. what i am really asking is what would be the best entry-level machine that would work in both the wet and dry sand on the beach. i am not looking to spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars. i would not mind purchasing a good conditioned, used unit off of ebay if needed. maybe a machine that can be switched to "black sand". any suggestions appreciated.

Mike, for hunting beaches most any detector will do, but they will not be stable in the wet sand. For that you need one with a Saltwater Mode. Models that will work in Wet sand are all Pulse Induction detectors. Tesoro Tiger Shark, and the big boys, (read $$$), CZ20 and Excalibur. I haven't had my morning coffee yet so I might have missed one with a saltwater mode.

Hi Mike:

Well, I was going to tell you to ask Sandman but I see he already posted (even before the coffee was finished, I'm impressed....lol). He knows his stuff. He's even about got me convinced to pick up another backup machine other then the Fisher Impulse that I've used for years. My whole thing in detectors is simplicity and versatility. That's why I use the Impulse.
