I am told it is "ceremonial stone artifact" need more info

I need to know more about this artifact. How can I tell if it is a reproduction or the real thing? It seems to be made of ground stone but seems too perfect. Can anyone please suggest a website where to start looking? I am very happy to be part of this forum.

Thanks

Could be Fred Flintstone's lug wrench...

Seriously, I think we need a little more info - like where and under what circumstance you found it.

I agree, it looks perfect. But don't underestimate the craftsmanship of people long ago.

awww looks like a caveman crescent wrench! :D Welcome to the forum and thankfully there are others here far more helpful than I am in helping with stuff like this. I am sure they will get you lined out with some great info in no time at all! Good luck and thanks for sharing this!

I think these are referred to as slave killers and are very rare and expensive. Artifacts are faked all the time, the best way to tell is to send it to an authenticator. If you go to arrowheads.com they list all the major authenticators. Usually costs about $20.

I would guess fake...the length of the blade as well as the general style indicates so. I hope it is real though and I am certainly no expert! I have only seen 2 authentic examples in-hand.

I have seen real ones that size in artifact shows and museums that are beautiful. I have also seen some really good fakes, there are a lot of crooks selling fakes as real artifacts.

Only way to be sure is to have it authenticated. Usually better to assume it's fake and be surprised it's not then assume it's real and be shocked its not.

You didn't start with 'In my opinion'

Here's a link that will give you a little info on it.

Monolithic hatchet from Moundville. (Length 11.6 inches)

http://www.mississippian-artifacts.com/html/hstone.html

The final and rarest ceremonial celt form is the monolithic axe. The normal Mississippian utilitarian celt was mounted in a wooden handle. By contrast, the monolithic axe is made into the shape of the utilitarian celt with wooden handle except that it is made entirely from one stone. There are about seven authentic monolithic axes recorded. Three were found at Spiro. The Spiro varieties were made from a black hard stone. Two were made with a long and slender handle and bit. The same two have an effigy pecked and polished into the opposing end of the handle. None of the Spiro monolithic axes show any signs of use. There have also been at least two other monolithic axes found in Tennessee. These Tennessee samples are finely made from Tennessee greenstone. The Tennessee examples also tend to be shorter and thicker than their Spiro counterparts. Of the few authentic monolithic axes that have been recorded, they range in size from ten to fourteen inches long.

Can you tell us what you know about where it came from?...If it's real you have a dandy.

Thanks Danglangly!

It was a gift to me from a girlfriend who bought it at a flea market from a rock hound.
I didn't have a chance to talk to the man but, like allways, he believed it was a real slave killer. It doesn't appear to have been used at all when I looked at it more closely there is a trace of dirt on it as if it had been in the dirt. It is very exciting to see that the end of the one in the pic you found looks like mine.....
