Really? I think I will show you then. This is a core I found it is black Chert.I won't disagree with anyone any longer because I don't want to be a pooper...but in my opinion its just a rock and its not chert...also chert doesn't really change colors in the sun like rock said..it may get a little pale but will not go from black to white. Good luck finding artifacts in that spot. Happy hunting.
Tnmountains said:Here is a very common tool..... Well I laid rail road tracks for many years and we used the nearest quarry for our ballast beds and tamped. Dif material in every state and county to be honest. One day crushed limestone another granite or salt and pepper. What ever even quartz was used... So this is a knapping tool. They used the cortex to grab the flakes like an antler billet as it was soft.<img src="http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=683151"/>

Cool!! Did you ever find much on the tracks?
Tnmountains said:We found lots of interesting things on the tracks but never any artifacts in our loads of rock. The stuff was crushed to a certain size at the plants . Just a few fossils. His looks like flint with the bottom with the cortex on but I have not seen anything that looks fused like that. But nature is unpredictable for sure. Interesting item.

This is a Clovis point from Texas with calcium carbonate deposit from ground water
