I can't figger this one out

I found this in front of an old, late 1800's church.

Never did figger it out?? :icon_scratch:

Re: I can't figger this one out

It's 5" wide.

It's 3" long.

It has two holes in the main body. No other holes.

The two flaps will rotate about 15 degrees up and down.

A fancy buckle of some sort?

It appears as though the flaps are a bit concave as though they would fit around a rod or pipe. I wonder if it could be a wall mounted lamp bracket of some sort? Interesting find!

Hay Cresol,

That's sort of what I was thinking.

Like it would guide a pipe of rail of some kind between the
two flaps.

Just a thought. Don't really have a clue?????

looks like an old spring loaded hinge for self closing doors.

I'll go along with Dozer Dan, looks like a self closing hinge that would go on a bar door for instance. Monty

Hmmm, I Think Dozer D has the best answer so far ...
Maybe but I dont remember ever seeing a door hinge with one hole in each side of the hinge.. ...unless there are more mounting holes that I cant see or its a welded on type. I wish you could clean it up a bit. With the fence latch theory, it would be bracketed on with two holes by a U=bolt.

Have you poked out all the holes? It may help with the ID.

It is a gate latch kind of like the one pictured. You see them on yard gates. One flap lifts to allow the gate to swing one way and vice-a versa.

My 2 cents is usually worth less then 1 cent but here goes anyways.

My first thought was it was something that is spring loaded, that was before I read the other responses, after reading the other responses I still think that. it also looks like each side of it moves independent of the other side as well.
