I found a cannon ball!

Yesterday I put in a good long day exploring a new section of the river and had some really good luck.



My best find was a cannon ball that was in only a foot or so of water and clearly visible from the surface. Can you see it?



I guess its algae beard camouflaged it pretty well.



I really like the bullets that were made into sinkers. I don't have too many of them and consider it a successful day if that is the only thing I would find.


Here is the ball ready for electrolysis.



I also found a broken carbine sling from the CW and lots of hand made sinkers. Here is my kayak with a load of muskrat traps that were strewn along the riverbank. I think one trapper had a bad season!

That is one thing yuh never see in the Finds section... Cool sinkers/bullets.. Cannonball is an awesome find......

Hi Aquachigger , Congrats on a nice haul of great CW relics ! A forge located down the road from my home made tons of cannonballs for the War of 1812 and for the Civil War. It is always exciting to see them or better yet to find one . It should clean up nice . A lot of good fishing on that creek a very interesting assortment of custom made lead sinkers . It's about time some Maryland CW digs are posted up on this forum . Thanks for the tread and continued success to you ! 8) dawg

Here is the ball all cleaned up fresh from electrolysis. All I have to do now is dry it throughly and coat it. I'm very happy with how it turned out. TFL!

I use a battery charger and baking soda. It can take several days, but this one cleaned up pretty fast. The scale flaked right off. Next I'll boil it in wax, but I'll wait until I get some more iron together to do a bigger batch. For some reason I do all of my iron to include horseshoes
