Yesterday I drove to the Northern California coast to do a little fishing. While walking along the shore, I found this object nearly fully submerged in the wet sand. It looks to my untrained eye as possibly a rock with sea shells and other things embedded in it. Or, it could just be a hunk of old concrete used for a pier piling or something that happened to get some shells stuck to it. I posted it over on the fossil forum earlier today for opinions but nobody has responded.

You certainly found a fossil. Or rather, a rock full of fossils!

Your rock is a piece of fossiferous limestone. It is full of large quantities of fossilized shells (clams and brachiopods). It was formed when a piece of sea sediment full of these shells was converted into stone.

Thank you for the identification!
