• This is a 1951 New York miniature license plate keychain tag issued by the Disabled American Veterans
• Plate Number: The tag displays a unique vintage configuration (CX 51-16).
• Slogan: It features the historic slogan "NY - THE EMPIRE STATE 51" printed in dark text over a yellow background, reflecting the color scheme used on official 1951 New York vehicle plates.

Back in the 70s I went to my mailbox and was surprised to see a set of my keys. I didn’t even realize I had lost them. I had my DAV license plate on the ring. In Illinois we used to get new plates for our cars every year. The mini license plate they sent you was always from a previous year so someone finding your keys wouldn’t be able to ID your car and steal it. This program ended quite a few years ago.

I think I remember seeing those when I was a kid back in the early seventies. I have no idea when that was no longer a thing.

I remember when the DAV used to send those out. I always thought they were pretty cool as well as a great idea. It's kind of a shame that they stopped the program. I still have a few examples around here somewhere.

For anyone who might not know much about them but wants to learn:

• Launch: The campaign started in 1941 at the beginning of World War II to raise funds and provide a lost-key recovery service.

• How it worked: DAV obtained vehicle registration mailing lists with the cooperation of state motor vehicle departments and mailed drivers a miniature replica of their license plate for their keyrings, asking for a small donation.

• The End: The popular program ran from 1941 through 1975, but was ultimately shut down due to tightening right to privacy rules regarding the sharing of vehicle registration lists.
