back in the early 90s i was helping my brother in law clear his lot in ft walton beach florida, we found a bunch of those and i didnt think about bringing them home,i did bring home a few shell celts and a bunch of broken pottery ,wish i would have known what they were
 

The Native Americans would force the holes over a live branch and leave the tree grow tight around the hole for a year or so. Once the branch was cut it was a tight handle fit.
