I googled 2011 lincoln cents......

......and most of the info that pops up is what they are selling for on ebay etc. My question is why are these selling for more than face value? I'm tired of searching the interwebs and figured I'd ask the pros.


PS.....One of the penny boxes I purchased today looks to be solid rolls of 2011's.

Because if you can buy them uncirculated now and in MS65,66,67 condition in 50 years they might be worth 30x face value.

Nope. This happens every year when the new coins come out. They sell for a (sometimes ridiculously big) premium for a little while, then later in the year you cannot give them away. Put your box up for auction and see what happens. Good luck!

Should I leave the box sealed?.....every date I can read is 2011, every tail is a shield....though I'm worried about misrepresenting what I've actually got.

I would definitely leave it sealed. I understand about not wanting to misrepresent what you have, so personally I would give a 100% accurate description. Something like, "You bought the box wanting to look for wheaties, but every readable date you can see are 2011's, and the reverses are all showing shields, so you are almost positive you have a new box of 2011's." Something of that nature. With only shield reverses and 2011 obverses showing, its HIGHLY unlikely that it is anything other than a box of all 2011's.

Maybe someone else has a better idea.

Well, it takes a while for them to reach the masses, and they are eager for the new years coins.
Personally, I haven't found a single 2011 cent yet. I have found just one 2011 nickel in circulation so far.

You aren't missing anything. The smaller the lot, the more expensive (per coin) the price. You'll probably make more money if you sell the rolls individually, and maybe even break open a roll and sell individual coins.

FYI - I'm in Arkansas and we're typically about the last to get the new year's coins. There are 2011 cents and dimes EVERYWHERE around here. I would get those things on eBay now!

personally i throw em back , tho i did a trade for some newer coins once with someone on this forum.
Its sorta like the new phones , some peeps always wanna be the first on the block with the latest tech.
