I got in the water today & found civil war relics

I water hunted today for civil war relics. These are from the 3rd corps Army of the Potomac. These were dumped 162 years ago to the day. I gound this sheriff tag also. I don't thanks it's civil war.

Care to share how you know which regiment they are from and when they were dumped? History is more interesting than bullets to me. Thank you! No disrespect intended. Just feel like there is an interesting back story.

Knowing the history of the troop movement in the area tells who was at this spot & when. Only one corps came through & camped at this area ever so deductive reasoning points to them. The 3rd corps Army of the Potomac prior to Gettysburg. You can read the movement of both army's from Virginia to Pennsylvania & back to Virginia. Thanks for inquiring. HH

Nice. Always interesting to me that lead found on land will be brilliant white, but lead from water (or wet soil) looks like the day it was dropped. I’ve found several shot bullets at a spot near Petersburg, the ones from the top of the hill are white, those near creek are gray. First one or two I found, wasn’t convinced they were even cw.

Thanks. The white on them is lead oxide. Its from oxygen exposure. In water the lead isn't exposed to as much oxygen that's why they are grey. That and being rolled around in stones keeps them grey..

I was hoping to hear some story of them retreating and having to shed weight just to escape with their lives.

I suppose if you won a skirmish and the other side used a particular caliber..you might destroy what you couldn’t use to keep it out of the hands of the enemy. 100 less bullets to kill your brothers.

I’d think they would be hard up to recycle the lead.

That’s union. They had plenty of everything. No need to recycle.

This was pre battle & they were marching. They threw these bullets out for some reason..they didn't loose them. I'm hopeful for a plate or two. It seems like this area hasn't been detected yet. I have a 2nd corps camp that whole crates of bullets were recovered. They got refitted just before the battle.

Knowing the troop movement in the area tells me who & when they were at different locations. The 3rd corps is the only documented corps to have went down this road going to Gettysburg. The others took different roads. That's how I find locations to dig civil war relics. I have relics from every corps in both army's durring the Gettysburg campaign. Even the emergency troops under Smith. Lots reading lots time pounding the ground looking sometimes for nothing.
