Looks like a copper awl. What state was it found in. It may be Native American from the copper culture period.

A needle is a good guess, but why copper when wood or bone would be more lightweight and readily available? Plus they float!
Could you post a few more pics(closer/different angles)?
Boot spike? Either strapped to the insole for climbing trees or under the toes for self defense?
