Maybe it is off an old type yard sprinkler, they had an adjustment on the side to alter the spray pattern.

I agree it looks a lot like an optics adjustment knob. Both pairs of binoculars I have have positive and negative values on them, though... is this how most optic knobs are setup? ...or do some have just positive values?

Dipoters go both positive and negative.

Some kind of gain adjustment for an electronic device with a potentiometer or rheostat?

Good call Ben... I might have shot from the hip on that one... Your right about the negative settings.

Looks like the crosshair adjustment part of a gunscope. Usually this part is stationary and the inner part is the adjustment. If this is actually close to the size of a dime or maybe a little smaller that is what I would guess it is.

My first thought was that it came from a gun scope. but most of them are usually around a quarter size or smaller. never seen one that large before and I (or my father) have owned/operated a gunshop for over 30 years together.

It is a weight for a stereo turntable to adjust the pressure of the needle on the record. I know this because I have been putting all my old record albums onto CD and my turntable is hooked up to my computer. The weight on the end of the arm has exactly the same markings.

Yes, I would have to agree! I knew there was something familiar about this thing. Although 2-1/2 inches is large for one of these, the markings are exactly like those on my turntable too.
