Found this while using my Garrett Ace 250 in a stream in Upstate NY

broken chain link?

[SkaBa]

Metal striking bar to start a fire?

[DirtyHowi]

looks like a really big hog-link...any farms in the area?

[BosnMate]

Does kind of look like a fire striker.

No farms for about 5 miles I found this buried in a stream in the middle of NY state land

Yep, farm or no, it does look like a hog ring.

Thank you all for the replies I think we have narrowed it down to a Hog Ring or a Flint Striker.

Easy tie breaker: if the face is flat perhaps a striker. If it is round - chain link. Strikers never had a round cross-section.
