I know ShinolA~ Tokens, Buttons, Buckles, Brooches & a SA trip with Lisa
Ok. I admit it. I've been pretty lazy about posting my finds. We've been out and about hunting here and there and came home with a few tidbits, but nothing as outstanding as some of the finds I've seen posted here.
I am proud to say that I did happen to find out what shinola really is.
You've all heard the phrase...but haven't you wondered what shinola was?

Shoe polish? huh. Who would'a thought it?
I've put most of my keepers from the past month or so here. I rekin the hightlights for me are the 'good for' tokens, the lead poker chips, the Buster Brown harmonica, the snake purse clasp and the few older coins.

This past weekend Lisa and I made our annual trip to South Alabama for a bit of hunting. We hit at least eight different sites that we had found through research. The weather was warm enough for us to keep tabs on where we were stepping and the ticks were out just waiting on us to pass by close enough for them to hitch a ride.
These places have all been logged in the past and the dirt that we wanted to hunt had been placed in large mounds....along with all the old handmade bricks and relics from the homesites. To make it even more difficult, it had been disturbed long ago...long enough for the new growth of vines and trees to invade. So, hunting these sites were very difficult, but boy did we have fun! Half the fun was in finding the sites that we had researched. Was satisifying knowing that our skills on the old maps and GPS were spot on.
We didn't spend a lot of time on each site. If we weren't finding anything worth mention after a couple of hours, then we moved on to find the next. Lots of places to be and not enough time to dig. :P We did finally happen upon a site that made the digging conditions a little more bearable.First at the front of the site, Lisa found an old gold ring.
I wandered around to the back of the property and found an Eagle button. Then the next two holes I dug had an old flat button. Haydens & Co I think it says. And then the little star button. We found lots of old iron, melted lead and what's it's ..and I still have the bucket of relics to sift thru. :P
Had a great time with my hunting buddy!
