O.K. everyone,
I acquired a new piece the other day and I cannot decide what it is. I have heard everything from hairpin which is a good guess and what I'm leaning towards to clothes pin, to drill. I have had many offers to buy it and one old man said it was the second best he'd ever seen. If it's the second best he had seen and didn't know what it was than why did he offer me an insane amount of money for it? He knew and was hoping that I didn't know what I had. Any help would be greatly appricated and HH.

Specs= 4" long, 7/8 of an inch wide and made of flint. Made from creek stained burlington and found in 2005 in St. Clair Co., IL. Finder has asked not to be identified, so we'll call him G. Not flaked at all on one side from being knocked off of the core of flint. I know alot about artifacts ,but this one has me stumped. Take a guess and we'll see where it goes. Thanks!

Sure looks like a drill to me. Has a little bend to it, but overall, it's has the characteristics of a drill. Maybe it was some paleoindian boy's first try. :D I'd hang onto it.

Sure looks like some sort of tool. Almost looks like it could be used for planting seeds, or cultivating but doesnt seem as if it would fit in the hand very well for that.

BAD, Just A Guess, Maybe A Decorative Piece Made To Look Like A Claw For Some Kind Of Ceremony. trk5capt...

Can't help you, badandy, sorry. But, it is a beautiful piece. Looks so fragile.

Letter opener?

Actually it looks to me like it would have been for skining the hides off deer or bear. Or for fileting salmon that they then hung to dry.The curvatuer is much the same as our fileting knives of today. Also possibly could have been a type of sewing needle or to just make holes in hides so they could run strips thru to pull the hides together for winter clothing or for their shelter. That's my best guesstaments HH

Awesome!!! I would say it's a tool of some sort. Paleodian or Atlantis may be able to ID it better. Can you post this under Indian Artifacts too. They seem to just go to that area of the forum only.

River :)

Great find! I sure wouldn't sell it until I got some appraisals from knowledgeable collectors. Otherwise it would be very easy to get cheated.

It is a drill. I found several over 35 years of walking plowed fields, river sandbars, plowed fire breaks, and wading creeks. Great find!
