Today I found a 1910 GOLD Sovereign complete with bezel. OMG; WHOO HOO YIPPEE and all them other good words.

I have been working this one "hunted out" park pretty hard the past 2 weeks and have managed 4 silver dimes, some clad and a meat cleaver. So today I decided it was time for a clad hunt. Headed off to one of my favorite tot lots and did ok. Then on to a couple more elementary schools that I hadn't been to in a while, and again I did ok.

So I'm heading for home and realized I was at an intersection where if I turned left and went about 1/4 mile there was another elementary school that I had not hunted since October. I don't usually hunt it because I rarely find more than a few pennies at that location. But what the heck it's a pretty day so maybe this is the day.

I'm pulling into the parking lot and there is just a ton of kids and their parents near the front door. Looked like they were loading up for some sort of outing, but there were no cars down by the playground so I go down there and park. I'm geared up and heading for the chips when a couple of kids come around the corner on their skateboards. One says "Are you going to find treasure?". I said I hope so, but probably just some pennies.

I round the corner of the building and danged if there aren't 2 teenage (13 or 14) couples playing at the far end of the playground. I normally stay away when there are kids around, but figured what the heck. So I stayed at my end of the playground and just tried to ignore them. I was actually doing pretty good for that school and finding some clad. I got under the monkey bars and got a tone I hadn't heard today and I figured I had some sort of jewelry or charm. I get it pinpointed @ 1/2" depth move one wood chip and there's King Edward staring me in the face. I swallowed hard, grabbed it and put it in my pocket. I poked around a bit more and worked my way to the edge of the chips and just kept on going towards another playground about 100 yards away that is in a park and not on school property.

I wanted so much to do the happy dance and yell and scream, but knew that would attract just too much unwanted attention.

So I hunt the other playground area and by now the teens are gone so it's back to the other playground to find the chain that I know just has to be there. Alas, I hunted every inch of those chips and got more clad but no chain.

What a day. $6.25 in Clad; a couple of keys, a gold colored kids ring marked India; some pull tabs and MY FIRST EVER GOLD COIN!!!!

How in the heck did you manage to concentrate on ANYthing after finding that! :D I would have been so excited over finding it, I'd just have to get back to the car, stare at it for a while, and pinch myself to make sure I wasn't dreaming! :D

What an awesome find!!! Many congrats to ya!!!

Nana :)

Nana - Believe me, as I was walking across to the other playground it may have looked to others as if I was still swinging and searching, but the coin was in my other hand and I was grinning from ear to ear ;D

Nice Sovereign! Get it checked out as it could be a copy. I found one once in a playground, a 1911, but found out it was a copy. Still, it was a 1/4 oz. gold copy so it wasn't too bad of a find after all.

Ray

Ray - It'll be at the coin shop Tuesday for show & tell. I've actually got a couple more of them that I bought with all the clad I've found over the past couple of years. I'm pretty sure it's the real thing, but either way I'm a happy camper. And after that I'll drop by the school office and notify them that I've found some gold jewelry and leave a number. If some one asks and can identify it, I'll return it.

Man, gotta love those Tot Lots...Cool Digs

you betcha. In fact I found a 18" gold chain last year in a tot lot, so the sovereign is now hanging from that chain around my neck.
