I think I found something good! musket barrel band??

was looking through my finds from today, and I think I have something interesting. I THINK it's a musket part. It has a stamp with an S under a crown and also 969 or 696 stamped inside.

I have no idea, but somebody will. Looks cool!

Try asking around, I'm sure you'll get an answer. Also, try looking at some pictures of old musket rifles, maybe you can get a match.

I'm pretty confident that it's a barrel band...to what, I'm not sure. It was a good 12" down about 10' from where the musketball was that I posted earlier.

Yes, it's a barrel band no doubt. I have no idea what it went to but you should post this on the "what is it" forum and have some of those guys look at it.

Just an update. It is confirmed that it is a model 1816 Springfield or Harpers Ferry. Just have to find the inspectors mark under the 'S' and I'll know which one it is

Is that barrel band brass or steel/iron? The reason I ask is that it looks brass. Every Model 1816 that I ever handled had iron bands, not brass.
How about taking a look at the Model 1841 "Mississippi" rifle? It had brass bands.
Nice find!

Ok. Good to know! It is definitely brass. Thank you for your help!
