It's hard to tell from the pics Hardy, do you think you might have a cross? Whatever it is I would love to know if you have had any luck straightening pieces like this without their breaking.

To add, when you find bent brass, it's best to bend back soon after recovery. My experience is when it starts to dry it becomes brittle.

Great job on the straightening :icon_thumleft: That brooch/pendant would have looked very flash with all the stones or pearls.

Good job, I am liking the trade stuff more and more. Wish there was more in this area. So far only one trade axe. Good job Hardy.

looks like an early victorian pin that had nine stones in it.

Good Crusader ! as you know the Victorian period was from 1837 to 1901 and the hight of trade period in Canada was up to

the mid 1800"s , Now for my own feel for this piece and the location I recovered it; Its 50/50 French. and I am leaning towards

French and a date about 1840' ish or earlier. Now if I could free up the square pin on the back of this Brooch and find a stamp

or makers name on the pin, life would be alot easier. :read2:

I'd go back to where you found it and dig up the dirt around and below where it was found. Put in bucket and carry home. At home I would rig a screen wire sifter and wash the dirt through it. You may just find some, if not all, of the stones that were set in it. If that was successful I'd try to remount them.

I would try and recover them. But it may be the reason it was discarded was because someone took the stones out for another use.
