I don't know...it is brass or copper and is not threaded...there is a hole through the base and the speration on the hook is by design...

If it's brass or copper could it be the hook on one of those moveable ropes you find at theaters, etc before they came out with the nylon stuff banks use to herd you to the front?

I guess I shoudl have mentioned that it is about 2 inches in length. I guess it could be as described above but I was thinking along totally different lines. I don't really want to say what I think it is as I do not want to taint the jury...

It is actually the fuse to a cannonball mortar. It is brass so that it would not make sparks. Here is a pic of a recently found mortar which still had the fuse in place and the powder inside.

I did not find this. I actually found a fuse last year and just thought it was junk metal. I didn't throw it away but I can't remeber where I dug it. Gotta put the thinking cap on so that I can go back to see if I can find some frags.
