This is not my post. Rock needed me to post this pic for him due to technical difficulties. His title and all. Now, I'll post the pic and join in on the conversation.

No problem bro. I have a piece that I have always called a hammer stone. It looks similar to the one above, but no where near as nice. What would you guys call this?

That is rare, is the base flat or concave? Mystery artifact, I have heard some wild theories as to what cones were used for.

This one was very flat. I dont even know what type of stone it is made from. A little old lady owns it.

Wow..cool! I've had this for over a year and still no clue.

A well-used hoof pestle.

Thank you sir. It does show some wear doesn't it? I found two of these in one spot a Mano, and a larger piece of the same lithic pecked into a football shape. That one is different. Don't have a clue what it is.

Can we see a couple more angels? Do you know the lithic and is the dark spot possible heat or fire damage? I sound like a two year old. 9 million questions!

Can you drop some of the theories on us kind sir? I have never seen a cone like this one.

Nice looking Cone rock. If you can get that at a reasonable price it would be worth your while to pick it up. They are rare artifacts indeed.

Here are two I own. The Hematite one is a personal find from a field that also gave up some Hematite Celts and Adz. The hardstone on I got at a flea market believe it or not for $25 because the guy had no idea what it was. He called it a Top. It is definitely good.

Some of the theories I've heard are that they were effigies of Mounds, they were put on the eyes of the dead (as far as I know none have ever been found like that), they were used as Tops (highly unlikely), and they were game pieces.

SRV - I have a very similar cone to your hardstone piece that I found in Southern Illinois

Thanks for showing your cones Steve. I dont know what price to ask for it. I looked at some close to the same shape on the net and most were starting price in auctions at $100.00 but I couldnt find the sell price on them. I dont want to over pay on it. I saw a thread where they called it a Spinal Whirl. Anyone ever hear it called that? I believe it to be real.

I've seen then called spinners or whirls before but, like falks said earlier, I don't think that's what they were used for. If that was the case they should exhibit very specific wear patterns that just aren't there. I don't know what it's worth. Sorry.

Thank you Twitch. Yeah I dont want to insult the lady with a low offer but then I dont want to over pay just cause I like it.
