This might be a basalt hammer.

Or maybe it's not.

Opinions, please.

If it is a tool (I think it is), then it's a pretty great find.

What do you reckon?

I think it's a water worn rock. I don't see any indication of human alteration.

You think nature chipped that point?

You may well be right.

I'm back and forth on it.

If it's 'just a rock', it's a super-tricky one.

How many random blows to create a faux tip and a faux stem?

I don't see any evidence of it being used as a hammer (battering) and it doesn't resemble any known tool that I know of.

Agree on both counts.

But the Devil's advocate says it wouldn't show many marks if it used was for hitting people.

True that I've not seen anything like it either.

I'm starting to sway toward it being just a rock... yet the tip pulls be back.

I think if it was used for hitting anything, it would show evidence of halfting.

the tip doesn’t say much to me, but the edge reminds me of some large scrapers or chopping implements i have seen.

I think you’re right. It’s hard to tell how it got that way. Could be a lost water-worn slab. But there is no way to credibly identify it

i can literally pick up a truck load of those any day of the week.
