I think it's some kind of belt plate!

My brother found this at an old 1860's site. Can anyone tell me what they think this is?
It seems like it's made of brass, on the back, is where the belt attached and is missing the loop that the belt attaches to.There is no writing, other than the U and R on the front, Thanks in advance, and good hunting!

Im pretty sure that stands for Uniform Rank. :icon_thumright:
