I think something is wrong with the detector

This could be caused by a coin being on edge or a piece of iron very near that is being discriminated out. This is called masking. Move the coil at the target from all four sides to see what happens. It it keeps up, wrap that BH around a tree and save for a better machine. Every manufacture makes it's low cost machines and mid to high end with most hunters getting along fine with the mid range machines.

? ? ? ? ? ? If you have auto GB you might be tuning it out . Perhaps if you moved the coil faster when trying to X the target it won't have time to tune it out .

Being familiar with BH detectors, I can almost guarantee your target is trash when that happens. Usually it happens on a weaker signal and it can be found easier when switching to an all metal mode. Proabably will find it is a nail or something similar that is throwing out a halo effect. Monty
