Detector(s) used
Minelab Sovereign Elite
I did some research on the town I live in which is 20 miles from Aspen. I found that the original town was on the other side of the river. I located the area. I was going to try out my detector for my first serious search there today. It was 50 degrees yesterday and the snow was melting. Tomorrow had to be nice, I thought. But, in the middle of the night I am awakened by some beeping. It is the backup for my PC and the electricity is out. I wake up this morning and there is a foot of new snow on my deck so I am back in the wait mode.

So far the only thing that I have found with the detector I bought last month was trash. I refuse to give up. I want some nice days and to hit some areas that I have looked at.

Don't give up!! I know spring has refused to be sprung here too! >:( I can't wait to see what you find!! :icon_sunny:

No Kidding it is coming from where you are and hitting here within a day or two after it hits you. That's ok I still need to get the 5 days left on my pass used up. I will need to do that in the next two weeks. I don't even care about skiing anymore. It use to be so important to me. Ah, the aging process.

aging or just found another addiction? lol Hang in there and surely the :icon_sunny: will be out soon!!

Here is link to the history of the town. What you have to remember is Aspen started out as a Silver mining town, not a ski resort, so raw silver should be around as well. I will be seeing what I can find near the Kilns in the picture.

wow...what a cool place to detect!! good luck!

Hello There from Trinidad!
Man, you are so right; this spring's been so unpredictable weather-wise! The wind's been blowing like a mob of crazy banshees since last night! The temp's up now and I went out this morning. I did not have much luck but did manage to bring home an 1905 Indian and 1919s wheat. So, the morning was not a total loss.

Be patient, it will be summer soon!

I agree with you. It will be a cool place to detect. I am not sure about the historic preservation site, but there will probably be enough places near it where the town was that I should find my first real treasure. Imagine the coins that were dropped and are still sitting there. I just hope that I can get as excited about the finds as you guys seem to be with yours.

Hey Trinidad. It is windy and snowing here as I type this with the snow blowing sideways. I just started a fire in the stove and will let that keep me warm. I am glad that you found something today. I am surprised that you haven't gotten hit with this storm. It is suppose to last through the day.

Definitely check into where the boundaries are for the historic site...don't want to be getting in trouble on that issue. I am sure once you pull up a coin that has been buried for a long time and realize you are touching history....some that hasn't been touched in a very long time, you will learn the happy dance too!

I will check on those boundaries. As for the happy dance.. So far all I have found are pull tabs, foil, and cans. Not much of a happy dance so far, more like s**t what is this crap and I bent my spade as well dance!

lol have done that dance before too! ;) But as Nick will point out...tis not crap, tis crappe! :sign10: Keep at it....it gets better as you become more in tune with the machine too. I will be here cheering for ya!

I have to admit there is a part of me that is looking forward to it. I have never detected before and picked up a used Minelab Sovereign Elite for $300 last month. It has not been used much. I'd rather buy a good machine that I can grow in to and have to learn rather than a simple machine that I will grow out of soon. I have a lot to learn about how all of this works. I have used the machine a few times in the mud in the past few weeks in a spot near my house where HS kids hung out. All I am finding there is trash including beer cans, liquor bottles with foil, pull tabs etc. What ticks me off is that this area is behind my house and the kids found it about 5+ years ago and they destroyed the old farm implements that were there etc. and all they did was leave trash.

The good news is that I have lived in this area for 32 years and hiked a lot in the beginning so I know where some old farm houses and home sites are etc. that I am sure have never been detected. Also Aspen was a silver mining community in the lat 1800's so who knows what is up there as well as under the lifts. I prefer to do my detecting down where I live as it was developed around the same time and there is less development here although it is growing fast. You would never believe what an incredible town Aspen was when I got here in the mid 70's. It has gone down hill since then.

You might see if any of the videos Gary Brun has posted on Youtube would help you with some of the tuning. He is from Minelab and I know the video I watched last night on the X-terra 70 was awesome, would have been a big help. Did your detector come with the video or not since it was used? Anyway, might try looking at some of his videos or seeing if any of the others there would help. The link to his video list is at http://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=garybrun&p=r Hopefully that will help in the learning curve a bit. If not, we can figure out something!

Thanks Cynangyl. I bookmarked the site you gave me. My detector did not come with a video but I found a good one for tuning a few weeks ago. I have a lot to learn about this machine but, from what people say it is good quality machine. I hope that I can get the benefit out of it that it has to offer.

My detector came in the original box with a few scratches on the control box. It had the original purchase date of 2004 and all the warrantee information, the original manual, a meter as well as a new hip bag for the control box. I might see if I can find a similar bag that I can put the meter in and attach it, via velcro, to the front of the hip bag and attach both to either my hip or chest. That will make it lighter and easier to swing.

You will love your sov elite ,,, I have a soverign GT best detector I own..Good luck.. Guzz1

Guzz1:

Thanks. Yours is the newer model than mine but from what I hear I got a good detector. I just got off the phone with my sister from your state. She is down in Jupiter and told me of the 75 degree weather you are having at the moment. Do you need a guest for a couple of days? Florida sounds a lot nicer than what I am looking out at right now. I have to go out and get some more wood for the fire, almost out of it as well as bring up the trash cans for tomorrow. I can't rationalize turning on the heat yet. I even had pipes freeze this year for the first time in about 15 years. That wasn't fun!!

Do you have any tips on how to use this detector?

Ken

It looks like a VERY nice place to live and raise a family, and a very COOL place to hunt, could have alot of neat finds.

The winter is perfect for RESEARCH Hehe! I know everyone whois not been able to get one is chompin at the bit!

Good hunting SOON i hope and post lots of pics of your finds as well as where you live! I like to see the secenry too!

It is a very good machine and sounds like you got it in good condition as well. Hopefully some of the videos will help you with some of the finer points of working with the machine. Sounds like you have a good idea about making the unit lighter and easier to swing. Soon you will be finding all kinds of great things with that machine!

Actually I looked at the link that you sent me and most of the films are about a different model machine than I have. I found some great information and videos after joining this site. One particularly on the Sovereign and how to tune it helped quite a bit.

mental granny:

It is a pretty place to live. There is a reason that people come to this valley to live. I am spoiled as I have lived here for my adult life and don't know anything else. At one point I had a very successful practice up in Aspen.

sweet! Thanks for sharing Ken! Always good to have more resources!
