My neighbor called me on my cell phone the other day while I was out. She asked me what an 1882 $20 gold piece was worth, as she was going through her grandfather's old collection and there was tons of gold, silver and copper coins, both US and foreign. I asked her if there was any letter on the reverse and she said there was none, but she was going to send a photo over.
When I saw the photo I told her I would be right over with my copy of the Red Book. There were cases of coins and currency spread about her kitchen and she didn't know where to start! There were beautiful Flying Eagle and Indian Heads (nice "Fatty" pictured), private and foreign gold coins... UNBELIEVABLE!
I had dinner plans but snapped a few photos of some stuff that was out on her counter.
Unfortunately the Double Eagle had an "S" mintmark, but still a $1600 coin!
