Hello all, My name is Noah and I just started metal detecting today. I'm 14 years of age, male, and live in Huntsville Alabama. I really got into coins and relics these past few months after finding a Morgan silver dollar at my church. I started researching about coins and then found more and more info on metal detectors. So just today for Christmas, my parents bought me the Bounty Hunter Tracker IV and I am so excited to get started.
I hope to get to know y'all and find many things, junk and otherwise.

Thanks everyone and may you find much treasure!
Noah

Welcome to Tnet Noah, if your not a tenderfoot who would be one? Congrats on the new detector, looking forward to seeing your future finds posts. Hey we all started at one time or another, have you watched any videos on your detector model?

I have watched some videos on my detector. I know that it is on the cheap side, but because I am a beginner, I think I just need a simple, easy to understand, cheap detector.
(And I meant tenderfoot in a literal sense, I don't have tender feet XD)

Welcome Aboard Noah! You didn't list your state (or country) in your profile. So, you might consider jumping over to Sub-Forums: Select Your Area.... and selecting location information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state (or country).

well noah -- being a old hand with detecting with the tracker IV -- I can help you a lot * --first that "meter" on it --forget it useless -- but now for the good news -- the tracker IV is a decent old school analog "sounds" type machine --which means once you train your ear to listen to the different sounds it makes ..it can help you sort out some of the trash from treasure (less time wasted digging junk = more time digging "good targets"--higher good finds % rate) now first things first -- there is a 3 setting toggle switch -- left 1 is all metal (single tone and it picks up all metal --most powerful deepest depth but "0" disc ) middle setting 2 is 2 tones --low tones (grunts) and high tones (pings) --pings are normally coins and grunts can be iron , pulltabs or gold rings ---right 3 is the "disc" mode -- using the disc knob you can cut out some pulltabs but leave gold in -- place it in mode 3 -- set it at "0" disc run pulltab under it --it should blip -- slowly move the knob upwards until it no longer rings up -- now use a gold ring or other gold item --it should ring up -- if not very slowly lower it just until the pull tab starts to hit -- now run the tab under it--- it should sound crackly and the gold should ping clearly -- that is how you want it set when hunting for gold (you will still dig some tabs but it will help with culling them a fair bit) --now if you hit a area with lots of iron in the soil (the machine will beep non stop as it eads the excess iron in the soil like a wall of metal ) -you might need to adjust for it by turning down your power output level to make the machine a bit less sensitive (just until the beeping stops) --yes it will get a bit less depth but it will now be useable --the same goes for beach areas ( sea salt has minerals in it ) and near high power line areas (emf bleed off)

do not "dis" the tracker IV as a "cheap machine" --while not very high priced its a good lil machine and quite popular still (there is a reason BH still makes them) -- it can find coins (dimes / quarters) up to say 8 to 10 inches once you get used to it --and it is good at finding gold rings if they are there once you set it up properly -- it might have some issues in certain "red clay" high iron areas in Alabama --but you can adjust for it in some cases --if its not too bad

oh get to know the "disc drop out scale " metals run from low to high as you up the disc knob more and more metals drop out from detection -- first is iron , then pull tabs/ aluminum /gold rings / then comes zinc cents / copper cents / dimes (clad) -- then comes quarters(clad) then halves and silver at the top end of the scale

Welcome Noah to this site. You will learn a lot just cruising on this forum. There is so much combined knowledge here. Welcome from central ms. If you're ever in this area let me know and I'll take you to a good relic site. Find some good civil war sites in your area if possible.

Welcome Noah,

Ivan's advise is right on. Learn that machine = you'll prosper! A year later or more, you'll have easily funded a step up. Always keep those unique things = they'll delight you for years to come - I've these jars from years ago = those are delights. Keep with it, and you'll have your own :)

glad to have you with us Noah, it's gonna be fun

Welcome to TNET!

Welcome to this crazy, fun hobby! The main thing is to stick with it and learn your machine, all the pull tabs in the beginning will make you want to give up but it is worth it to push through that because you'll start finding treasure! Best of luck in the new year :D

Hey, Noah, many of us started with basic machines. If the bug really bites you like it did me, you'll dig enough to upgrade soon enough. Here is a pic of the one I started with The TC 1023, it had 3 tones and I learned how to set it up from mining posts when I first found Tnet back in 2013.

I think the only thing I'm still having trouble with is finding a specific area to go hunting. I know the general areas, but I haven't found a specific place to go hunting :BangHead: . I know it'll come eventually, but I'm just so anxious to go out hunting. :laughing7:
