Watch someone build this thing one day and find a seated quarter or something........lol.........on another note, before buying my first detector, I did run into this site. If I had just a little bit more circuit/welding know how, I'd try this thing out. I wonder if anyone here has built a homemade detector?

I was thinking about making a large coil and seeing if it would work...I think I would try it out on an old machine ,so if I fry something it wouldnt matter....

Altek, Goldpic and C-Scope all produced plans or kits. Most would sell you a completed coil as the accurate building of a coil is so hard. Don't get it quite right and much of the performance is lost.
The Saxon detector is a BFO. So right from the off you have little depth, no discrimination and a tendancy for drift.
Compare the cost of the parts against the cost of a ten or twelve years old detector and its far better to get an old 'brand name' machine.
On the other hand if you want a project and to learn a little more about detectors then a self build could be a good move but its not going to compete with most commercial products.

I agree that getting an old machine to play with would be easier/cheaper. But some of us just can't help ourselves. I'm working on a PI detector. We don't have any gold or silver in KS. We don't have many old coins here. So I'm looking for a meteorite. I want to build small, med, large coils. I just spent $40 on a signal generator to test coils, I could have bought an old MD for that. Now if I could just get back to it, I keep having other chores like cutting some more firewood before the weather gets too cold.

If you want to find out how deep those waters are, go to Geotech and Findmall forums

Cool ! I'll pass this on as i know of someone thinking of building one as a project for his son.Lukily though The boy is getting an ace-250 for Christmas ! ;D I thought this was something to think about,I think the anser was a good one :D !Q. Our son wants to build this detector for a school exam project, could you build it for him and send it to us.

A. No tell him cheats never prosper.

WOW, lucky kid!! I'm building one cause I can't afford one.
