I'll never be a BoyScout, but...

I went to Sweet Arow Lake today.
Got a call last night they cleared some brush by the Parking Lot.

got down there and realized I forgot my "SWINGY THINGY"
I'm so used to it, My Detector felt like it weighed a ton.
Had my 15" W.O.T. on.

Have you Ever tried to Detect a Freshly cut Corn Field ?
This is what it was like. I had to lift my Heavy Detector,
8 to 10 inches above the ground to swing it. :( .
Place used to be a Beach. Now Woods. loaded with Can tabs,
Cans, Aluminum Foil, etc.

I did spend an hour there this morning.

Keepers.

1 Wheat 1921
2 Sinkers.
1 1946 Washington Quarter
1 1940 Mercury Dime.

Anyone think I WON'T "Be Prepaired" Tomorrow ;D

The swingy thingy is a unique device. I think it makes you swing your detector in a better pattern. I notice I keep the coil flatter to the ground. Also when you adjust the height to get above field stubble I get caught a lot less. Also when getting up the unit hangs a little below my waist so I don,t have to bend over again to pick it up. At $30 plus $5 shipping it is well vitro the price. I got mine at the following address:

Thanks for posting that photo of the swingy thingy...I am going to make one....My arms are killing me even tho I have tried switching hands back and forth when detecting . I have to squat down to dig or get on my knees,so will need to figure a way to lay it down while digging.

Nice finds...Silver always nice...Corn field sounds like the rocks over here...and trash is all over the world...I hate foil so much...Always makes me think I have bronze! and it is everywhere...Ahhhhhh!
That Minelab must be heavy!

Re: I'll never be a BoyScout, but...

Thanks Jeff. I do bend over to dig and now, since I broke my leg, I doubt I'll ever be able to squat again. My hubby really likes to do the digging and that's great, but I like to MD alone most of the time. When I wear the box on my waist there is enough lead to the wires that I can lay down the detector and dig while bending over, but I'm still interested in the swingy thingy to take the weight off my arms.

Vicki,

One of the members of my club uses a shovel that has a D handle and is long enough to reach his waist. He can dig while staying standing. His locates the target, dig a shovel full, checks the hole, if he gets a signal he dumps the shovel and digs again until the signal is gone. Then he lifts the shovel up and checks the dirt. The shovel does not have a real large head and the shaft is oak. It did cost a little more than my Walmart $7.00 garden shovel but if it helps. Another advantage to the longer shovel is since it reaches the ground he lets it drag as he detects and it leaves a mark on the ground so he can tell where he has been when hunting a large dirt field. I hope this helped.

P.S. Scout motto "Be Prepared"
Scout Slogan "Do a good turn daily"

This post should qualify for a good turn.

Re: I'll never be a BoyScout, but...

Thanks Ed! Good advice and I'll have to check into something like that. Right now I use one of those small folding digging shovels I got from and Army surplus store. When my hubby digs, he uses what I call "Big Bertha"! It's a regular shovel. I like the small one because sometimes I go where I don't want to be real obvious. I'll have to try and find one somewhere in between. Thanks again.

Sorry Jeff, didn't mean to take over your thread.
