From what I have heard they are usally dark in color,broken at right angles.

Recognizing fire rock is number one and then flint is second. Fire rock will always stick out and they will be usually the best sign to look for. Sometimes you will only see one or two fire rocks. And if it wasn't for those one or two I would be skipping the hard to see things. Most people miss 99% due to rushing. Sometimes looking at the surface on a spot that measures to the size of a small room can take sometimes an hour or more. Take that field flood spot. I hit the small piles once very hard, but that wasn't enough because the second time more came out off of the surface. So if your looking at a spot with lots of rock you always have to pay close attention. And a good spot with lots of rock can take hours. But I don't have any close up shots of a fire cracked rock. They look dark and are mostly hardstone and quartz and they have rough break offs. A really rough looking darkened rock. Like I said sometimes they don't just appear at first glance and most of the time they're spread out.

When you find these eroding out of a bank would it be worthwile to dig them out or are the artifacts found with these pits fire damaged? Seems that there would surely be points in these but would they survive the fires?

It's illegal to dig here in Indiana. Actually I would say most of everything found is associated with a fire pit. I've found nice stuff from fire pits. Sometimes artifacts are messed up though.
