Hey guys it was great to see all of you out there today. I had a late start but I finally made it. Right off the bat Bob showed me his awesome find, man that was sweet!!! I tried to get some video but my cam would not cooperate with me, I just figured it out right now.... :-[

Well my first few coins were clad, then I got a super sharp 1920 merc, #47 silver for the year - my goal is 50 so only 3 more to go!!! Then some wheaties then the Marten Van Buren Crackerjack coin then the rest of the relics. My oldest wheatie is a 1925. I found 1 wheatie with a hunk of rust attached to the back (I think I just found my first rusted out 1943 steel penny). I hope everybody had fun and we definitely have to get together at least one more time before the weather shuts us down. :icon_pirat:

GREAT ASSORTMENT OF UNUSAL FINDS! GOOD TO SEE YOU TOO BUT ONLY FOR A SHORT TIME!

Very cool digs Kermit!

Can't wait for our next get together! I'm doing one today!

Nice finds, Kermit! Nice job on that '43 steelie. Finding a wheatie with a steel cent stuck to it means you're locked in to that SE. I'm just starting to learn to slow down and try to pick out the good stuff from the iron. Nice score on the merc too, of course!

Joe

You got the camera to work.....Cool finds...
Got a close up of that 43 I'd like to see that....

Looks like a great spot... I'd be digging every signal around there, but it looks as if you are! WTG TF!

Looks like a very nice collection of relics! The shaver and lipstick are awexome :) Congrats!

Kermit, that Indiana plate is very cool!!

Nice finds there bud!
I wonder how many walked over that one thinking it was a jar lid or can top.
Mike

No the 1943 penny was made out of steel, its the only US coin that will stick to a magnet. Modern pennies, 1983 and newer are copper plated zinc.

oh ok

Actually they were zinc plated steel.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1943_steel_cent

to replace the then-standard bronze alloy, the one cent coin was minted in zinc-coated steel. It was struck at all three mints; Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco. Coins from the latter two sites have respectively "D" and "S" mintmarks below the date.
