excellent find, looks to be a ring indeed. What kind of metal i wonder, and what could the stone be? it could possibly be a class ring, made of some cheaper matieral. I saw a middle school ring a week ago someone found, and it was starting to develop some of that black on it around the stone.

I found a ring totally encrusted in coral in Hawaii. That appears to have a stone so be careful. Please post a set of pictures of it being de-encrusted. Mike

If you have a friend that works in a hospital, ask them to take it to Radiology and have an XRay done for you. That will show you exactly what is there. Veteraniarians have the same stuff if you know someone there.

That would be a cool Xray to have.

Thanks for asking about the ring. I have not started cleaning it yet. I do like the ammonia idea though. In the past believe it or not, I have left coins and rings that were crusted dry out and eventually the crust just chipped off. However I was never able to restore the luster, they always remained black. I will keep everyone posted.

You might want to try electrolysis on it - you can make your own electrolysis kit quite easily.

If you'd like me to explain how I made my own electrolysis kit I'd be happy to post about it here.

Here are the before and after pictures of a badly encrusted silver ring that I found a few weeks back in the water at an ocean beach. It was not as heavily encrusted as yours though. I've also used electrolysis on a silver ring that was pretty discolored but not really encrusted. It had five stones set in it, and the electrolysis did not harm the stones at all. I have heard though, that if you have an item that has stones glued into it rather than set with prongs, that the electrolysis will melt the glue and the stones will fall out.
