Hi everyone,
this popped out while digging a coin target at a old colonial cellar hole.this foundation is near a river.
the half dollar is for size comparison.
it appears to be made out of shale? not sure on that but it's greyish black stone.
curious as to what its use was and how old?what tribe?i live in waterbury,ct

Dunno, those don't appear like any I'm familiar with. Slate points seem to occur mostly in areas that are poor in lithic resources and there wasn't much choice. I hate using the "C" word, but many of them have been made for uses other than utilitarian. Those are generally very well made though.
 

I think I'll have to start calling it a pencil instead of a punch.
It does write.
Possibly more modern than the points I find around it.
The next time I go to Dickson Mounds museum I will ask Alan Harn (the archy) about it.
