I hunted a couple of fields the last few days and found these.
Check out the patina on that 1874 IH. I was told that the bell [it is the size of a nickel] is an Indian trading bell. They were traded to the indians who wore them. Correct me if I am wrong. I dont know what the other item is.
Any info is appreciated. Good hunting to all.

Nice looking finds Merf. Like the bell

That is a crotal bell....If im not mistaken they were sleigh bells...but great finds.

Nice finds Merf. That '74 IH is a good date. A little rough but still sweet. ;D

Love that bell.

Bob

think the bell ID is right on merf....
sleigh bells are usually larger ?
so the horse doesnt eat them by mistake
so they will spit them out
if they are large they wont ingest them ???
side note i think its possible a trade item....

WTG on the V , I got my first 2 today. HH!!

Merf,

Don't think it would be fair trade for the "kalber"... ;D ;D ;D

Great finds Merf way cool,

Nick
DOH!

Thanks to all-- When I found the bell I was hunting with the secretary-treasurer of the Illinois Archaeological Society. He said it was a trading bell and explained the difference from sleigh bells. He is well versed in indian artifacts. The indians liked to wear the bells.
I rest my case. Good hunting to all----Now get out there and find some bells.

A good link Agie------I could not find a pic of the same bell that I found at the site.

Great job Merf. The only IH I have found so far was a 1874 also.
You da' Man!

I think you are right DB---I know I have seen one before.
A Loooooooong time ago.

I've never heard of an indian trade bell. I have found many of these small crotal or petal bells but they were all found on land worked by animals...no indian trading. I suppose anything could be considered "indian trade: items if they were traded to the indians... ;D
