Iron buckle with weird pin. unknown age.

Found this iron buckle metal detecting. What is with the pin on the buckle? How old is it? Found it close to a old truck. In a 1880s house site.

It's an old dog collar. The loop thingy is for attaching the dog tag.

It looks like what is called a strap buckle with a locking tongue. I found one of these curious iron buckles last year but can’t find much information about age or historical uses. Nice find.

Yup. .. They are still made today.
