I found this on the surface at an old school site (1911-1930s). My first thought is iron buckle. Any thoughts?

HutSiteDigger's guess is most probably correct... the statistical odds favor it being a horseharness buckle. Non-plated iron tends to pretty quickly make ugly rust-stains on clothing and other articles made of cloth. There would still have been a LOT of horses in use around that 1911-1930s school site.

Just curious what would they have been used for at a school? I'm surprised I found it on the surface!

I don't think it is a buckle. My bets would be that it's a ring from the top of a clevis pin, hitch pin, or something of that nature.
