I went out hunting the other day in a wooded area that had a tavern until 1840, when it burned down. I had already searched an area across from the tavern site which had a foundation. I found an 1836 large cent, plated & gilted buttons, a watch key and various other artifacts. I was unsure of the tavern site in the past, I cannot find the foundation, but I am 90% sure that these relics came from it. It has become overgrown with the thorn bushes that are notorious for my area and I was not prepared for that so I did not spend as much time as I would like there. Afterward I drove 2 miles and searched for the site of a rumored iron forge from the same period. I found a depression in the ground and a HUGE pile of clam & Oyster shells that were likely used as flux in the forge. It was getting dark by then and the area is 5 miles from the nearest road with no cell service, so I reluctantly headed for home.
I cannot identify the iron relic. Any idea? It is solid & heavy and was found next to the chain. Is it an iron?
