I found this yesterday at a site that was active from the late 17th through the late 18th centuries. It's obviously some sort of spring but I don't know what from-any ideas?

It certainly has the right shape to be a spring for a flintlock mechanism, but is it too large?

I wouldn't say it is a spring from a flintlock, that would be hard to prove. All side lock long arms had such springs, pistols had them too, even my side by side 410 shotgun from the 1920s has the same type of spring and about the same size too.

You're right gunsiI! I should have said its a spring from a gun! The rest of his finds at that site will help swing the odds toward one century or another. Now go find the lock, DnD! Everyplace I've found one of those springs a lock or hammer has been waiting:occasion14:
