Detector(s) used
Whites M6 - Standard coil & Super 12
Hello all,

I found this box right next to an old tavern site that my wife's grandfather told me about. I was using a long range detector and got a very nice hit in silver mode. I went to the spot, pulled out my Whites M6 / Super 12 and got a very good VDI +82 hit. After 2 1/2 feet over digging I pulled out this box. There is an underground spring nearby that supplied the water for the whiskey which made for a little easier digging once you got past the frozen soil. I plan on going back once the ground thaws out a little bit. I think it might have some kind of silver alloy in it...not sure though.

Box dimensions:

14" Length
6" Width
3" Tall
7lbs Weight

I cleaned it up a bit.

Really cool, it looks like it was a strong box!

at 7 lbs, I doubt its a lunchbox. very cool find indeed.

excellent find wow 2 1/2 feet deep I gotta get me a new coil Nothing inside it?

I don't see any evidence of a lock, clasp/hasp or hinges. Most strong boxes can be opened, closed and locked.

I'm guessing ash tray on a parlor size coal stove. ;)

But keep looking in case I'm wrong.

Long range detector? Does it work better than a monkey's paw on a string?

Is it fused/ rusted shut? I know it would not be staying shut for long if I dug it.
Hammer, chisel, sawzall, or dremel, that thing would be opening real quick ;D

Nope, nothing in it...thats why I'm going back...LOL! It appears that maybe it might have some melted metal in it. The metal is very irregular, pitted indside the box. I got down to some "shinny" metal but the rest is a different type of metal than what the box is made out of.

Maybe used to melt down lead into ingots? That might explain the "shiny" stuff you found?! Keep us informed...inquiring minds want to know...

There are no signs of hinges or a top of any kind. I was just being hopeful.

Here are a few pic's of my "Long Range Detector"

It is for real. If there is gold or silver in the area it will locate it. I bought it, practiced with it, took it out in the field (or in this case, old tavern area) for a test run and found the box above. It was still hitting on a silver signal after I removed the box so thats why I'm going back!

FYI...it also works great in stun mode against Klingons ;)

It was approx $700

Since it works against Kligons I want one! No really its pretty cool!

Yeah, that is cool. Get back there and dig that silver signal for goodness sakes! Finding an old tavern site is like a treasure hunter's dream. Best of luck to you.

My thoughts exactly. They may have buried some caches around there. Good luck to you!!!

The second pics looks like there is a lip, maybe its a sliding top type deal(just really rusty build up hiding most of it).

i myself found a metal boxy thing at one of my sites(its about 8in deep in the ground)similar too your pic i only dug about half of its length and covered it back up till i can get back to it...my thought is that what i found was a gas tank sorta, but seeing this post I'm thinking otherwise

get a hacksaw and cut the end off that bad boy

You guys must be looking at that thing wrong, it certainly appears to me that the box doesn't have a lid, its empty!!!!!

Dick, can you clarify??

What does your detector say the box is by itself, and is it possable that was a box that had silver coins in it, and maybe the tavern burned down and the fire was so hot it melted the coins, and possably there is more under where it was resting, hell it could have been a building there before the tavern, just a thought. anyways that is a very interesting find, the closest thing to that I've found was a copper cook pot or water dipper, about 3 cups in size. Good luck on that site, may you stike it rich!

kind of looks like and early style safe deposit box, they had sliding lids

Thank you...thats exactly what i was trying to explain in my earlier post

The top picture is looking at the "Open" topless side of the box, no shadow to help you see depth (put a ruler stabing down inside of it and others wwill understand that it has depth. neat rusty old "open" continer.... where are all the crackers or chocolates!
